Dixons Posts Massive Loss

While the retailer typically comes under fire for its poor customer service record, today it makes the headlines for posting a significant loss. Smaller than last year's it may be, but £7.9million is a lot of money in anyone's books.

My news story on this, which can be read here, http://tinyurl.com/32qmoly, comes at a time when the electronic retail community is anticipating big ticket purchases like 3DTVs, PC systems and Apple's iPad to entice customers to their stores over the festive period. Whether that will happen or not depends partly on the willingness of people to part with their cash before the imminent VAT price rise takes hold and partly whether they'll have a job to pay for all these purchases in the long run.

Bottom line: if consumer confidence doesn't pay off over what is traditionally a big-money period for Dixons, it could find itself in a spot of bother.
